A little bit of History.

Citrus is the common name and a genus within the family Rutaceae.   Citrus may refer to oranges, lemons, grapefruits and limes and also to closely related fruits in other genera such as kumquats.

There are thought to be only three true species of Citrus. Citrus maxima (pummelo), Citrus medica (citron) and Citrus reticulata (mandarin).  All other citrus today are hybrids, even when grown true from seed.

Oranges are hybrids of pummelo and mandarin, grapefruits are hybrids of pummelo and orange, lemons and limes are hybrids of citron and an unknown species.  A kumquat is a hybrid of a mandarin.

Citrus is believed to have originated in Asia [India, China borders]. Alexander the Great brought citron to Greece from Persia.  It made its way to Palestine in 200BC and across to Europe. Other citrus followed a similar path from Palestine brought by Arabs across the Mediterranean. Citron, sour orange, lemon and lime were cultivated in Italy, Spain and Portugal by the end of the Middle Ages.  The sweet orange arrived from china in the mid 1500s, to be widely cultivated in Italy and Spain by the seventeenth century. .
